Previously in The Voice Said Kill, what started out as an investigation into a missing moonshine baroness’s son has devolved into a nightmare for Marie. She has inadvertently uncovered a massive drug deal and has found herself the dealer’s captive. With no other choice, she has led the criminals to the Watters Family.
STANDOFF
The Voice Said Kill #4 starts off with Marie and the drug dealers that have kept her hostage arriving at the Watter’s compound. After some tense words and threats exchanged, the two groups find themselves in a standoff. Before it gets too bad, the matriarch of the Watters family arrives and begins to negotiate with the drug dealers. But when they go to take a drink from the flask that the drug dealer’s leader has, she recognizes it as her son’s, and things take a violent turn. As the gunfire finally settles down, Marie is still alive. But she’s not out of the woods yet, as her agreement to find the missing Watters boy comes back to haunt her.
COMPELLING BUT RUSHED
The Voice Said Kill #4 stands in stark contrast with the rest of the series. What had been a slow-burning and tense thriller suddenly became a drug-fueled gun fest. There are still some spectacular scenes here that are dripping in malice, and seeing Marie come to terms with the reality of her situation filled me with a mixture of relief and dread. But a majority of this issue is devoted to the gunfight that breaks out. The problem is that this scene just isn’t very satisfying; this is due in part to a lack of development for most of the drug dealers, as well as the absence that the Watters Family had after the first issue. It was hard to cheer to see these two groups get it when there wasn’t much effort put into making the reader feel anything at all for them. Also, the big turning point in the issue hinges on something that feels both far-fetched and sudden. The issue does end with a great scene, though, that mostly makes up for the lackluster middle section. Seeing the three women characters squaring off with each other as the concepts of motherhood and business go head-to-head made for a compelling and poignant confrontation that led beautifully to the ending that truly felt like the only way this series could’ve ended.
GETTING A LITTLE LOST IN THE SAUCE
Drugs and their effects play a big role in The Voice Said Kill #4, and the artists took full advantage of this and gave us a truly surreal and brain-twisting series of pages. If the intent was to try to simulate the haze and discombobulation that heavy doses of psychedelics can have on someone’s perception, then I would say this is a success. Unfortunately, while the effect was palatable, the legibility of the issue suffered. There are moments when it’s simply too hard to tell what is going on. But in the moments when things do become clear, and we get to see some of the wide-open shots that have been utilized so effectively throughout this series, that’s when this issue shines brightest. In particular, the final page is superb in how it communicates the gravity of everything that has happened and what is on the horizon.
BOTTOM LINE: ENDING THINGS ON AN UNEVEN NOTE
As a series, The Voice Said Kill is a solid thriller that mixes tension, violence, and personality expertly, except for this final issue. While this issue is still well above average, it doesn’t quite stick the landing after what the previous three issues have built up. A lot of what made the series interesting is pushed aside for an extended action sequence, and the resolution comes about from a source that pushes the limits of believability. Still, there are some moments here that elevate this issue beyond these things and make this a worthwhile read. 4 out of 5 stars.
